By 1983 Brigitte Schenk started working for the German branch of the “Dia Art Foundation” in Cologne, supervising projects like the 7000 Oaks by Joseph Beuys. A decade on, after a five-year spell working for A.R. Penck, she opened her gallery, publishing limited editions of Rosemarie Trockel, A.R. Penck, Walter Dahn, Maria Zerres and others. The regular gallery program has developed to feature artists like Curtis Anderson, Maria Zerres, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Arnulf Rainer and Random International who became known through their technically sophisticated, interactive installations (like the Rain Room). Meanwhile her work in the “Menasa Region” (the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia) from 1999 on as one of the real pioneers in the field has led to artists of that region showing with increasing regularity in Europe. Tarek Al-Ghoussein’s representing Kuwait and Abdullah Al Saadi the UAE at the respective pavilions at the 2013 and 2017 Venice Biennale as well as Saudi Arabian artist Abdulnasser Gharem who received international recognition after his solo show at Los Angeles County Museum in 2017 were cases in point.
